Name:
Seamus Robert Nelson
Where you are from and a little about yourself:
I like to say I’m from America. My dad is retired from the Marine Corps, so I’ve never lived in one place longer than 4 years. But I went to high school in Bandera High School, it’s close to San Antonio.
I’m a communication major on the speech track. I’d like to get into the marketing field when I am done with school.
I am a member of two organizations, SGA and Beta Theta Pi. I would recommend both, they are a lot of fun and productive as well.
For fun, I like to hang out with my friends, or go to the beach (or both at the same time). I also enjoy soccer.
Year:
1986, Junior
Ideas about your Position:
As a senator, I want to keep student concerns in mind and try tackling them as best as possible.
As the PR chair, I just want to make sure that all the students know what SGA is up to. There have been too many years of SGA taking action and no one knowing about it. For example. Very few people outside of SGA know that we had a big part in the establishment of the Tutoring and Learning Center (TLC).
Short Term Goals:
Establish a good PR plan for SGA.
Long Term Goals:
Make SGA something that a lot of people want to take part in. I want there
to be some serious competition to get in every time there are elections.
Why I wanted to be in Student Government:
Really, I wanted to be involved and there was an opening when I was a freshman that a friend told me about. I didn’t know it existed before that. But I am so glad I’m in now. There are tons of opportunities to develop as a person and leader and also to travel and meet some really cool people.
Why you feel Student Government is Important:
While there are a handful of administrators who are in touch with the student body, many of them, and even many faculty and staff are out of touch with what we want. It is important to have a student government, because they are the connection between the students and the higher-ups of the university. We let them know what they are doing wrong, and try to tell them what they are doing right as well. Without SGA, I don’t think that TAMUCC would be a very inviting environment to the student population.
